I’m pretty witty, or so I’ve been told (but I only tend to trust my closest family and friends). I’m also frustrated by the lack of depth related to making peace with your fork, your body and ultimately, your life. Put the two together and you have my blog. It’s dedicated to looking at weight loss through the lens of calling a truce with food and your weight. Sometimes it’s humorous. On occasion it’s angry. But it’s always with a passion for helping to liberate those who no longer want food and corresponding self-worth to dominate their lives. This isn’t mainstream weight loss information. It’s for those interested in the journey losing weight offers, if we accept the challenge. Explore some posts. If they resonate, feel free to subscribe so you can receive inspiration on a sensible and spirited approach to weight loss. I’m always up for writing about your questions. February Newsletter: Big News, Detox Time and Super Bowl Recipes

Happy February,

I know many of you are at the end of your rope with Winter. I normally am too but I had a big surprise last week that has me ignoring the wind whipping at my face. I got engaged!

Despite being with Carlos for almost five years, I'm still in shock. It was a wonderful surprise.  He called me after my class last Saturday night and told me he was locked out on the roof deck. This made sense to me because Carlos frequently goes to read in random places around the city. I returned from class, went to "retrieve" him from the deck and there he was with music, candles, roses, champagne, dinner, a gluten-free cupcake and a beautiful amethyst ring. He even had a heater up there. He really thought of everything. It was a magical night.

Your Fork is Your Power

Did you know that your food choices have more of an impact on global warming than the car you drive? You betcha'!

Tonight I'll be on the internet radio show Cookspeak where I will provide information on how you can cool the planet with your fork AND get healthier at the same time. Host Tom Totin and I are going to discuss my new book "The Roots of Going Green: Your Fork, Your Power". (You can purchase the e-version here. It will be available on Amazon in about a month). We are going to discuss organics, does it really matter, what are all these labels about, how do you know if something is really "Green", and lots of other great information. You'll walk away with some great tips on how to tread much lighter on the planet.

Join me tonight, Monday January 25th from 7-9 p.m. To listen, call:

Put Healthy Choices on Auto-Pilot

We do lots of things automatically to ensure our success in life. Money goes automatically into our 401(k). We have automatic bill pay.  We put weekly meeting reminders in our Outlook calendar. All this makes it so we don’t even have to think.

What about putting healthy choices on auto-pilot?

Yes. It can be done.  You don't have to default into overeating or take-out. One of the best strategies is to always have basic whole food staples in your home.

Here are some great ideas for whole food kitchen staples

I'll be posting next week the basic kitchen tools to make cooking quick and simple. Stay tuned...your health depends upon it!

The #1 action that sabatoges weight-loss

Almost one week in January down!

I’m trying to hard to appreciate winter for the slower pace but can’t lie that spring is on my mind. Especially considering the Steelers aren’t playoff-bound. Ouch!  After one week back on the healthy living train, I am ready for skirts and short-sleeves!

If you aren’t there yet and would like to be by Spring, make sure you join me for my 10-week “Make Food Your Ally” group program starting February 2 at Eviama Spa in Rittenhouse Square. All the details are here:

If you have health goals, particularly weight-loss, consider these 3 "must-dos"

Happy New Year!

As I write this, I just returned from my first work-out of the new year. It felt so wonderful to be back into my routine. As much as the last two weeks were what I needed—family, friends, wonderful food and rest, I am definitely a gal who does better with structure. Before I get to the 3 things you must do to succeed at your health goals for the year, a couple of updates:

1.I’m focusing my health counseling practice to women who want to make peace with food. Americans in general have a dysfunctional relationship with food but I find it hits women the hardest. Weight is an emotionally charged subject and unfortunatley, our mainstream medical system and media don’t address this.

Chris’ Story: Getting her Life Back, Pain Free

I wanted to write you and let you know how my five-minute conversation with you changed my life. We discussed my back pain, which you told me could be due to my digestion and how a wheat allergy could be causing the pain I was experiencing. I told you I had been to 20 different doctors and had almost every test under the sun. I was frustrated and taking lots of meds which I really did not like or want in my body.

Kathie’s Story: Investing in Herself

Working with Ali Shapiro is the best gift I have ever given myself. Her positive attitude and depth of knowledge helped me identify the reasons behind my poor food choices and motivated me to make better, and easier to maintain choices related to nutrition, exercise and overall living the best life I can.

Pat’s Story: Connecting Food and Life

I am 61 years old and have gained a lot of weight over the past few years due to quitting smoking and falling into poor eating/exercise habits. I met Ali when I was recuperating from a back injury. When I first went to her I struggled to walk the distance from the train to her office. We worked together for six months and during that time, she helped me to focus on weight loss and health from a holistic point of view.

Christine’s Story: Stopping the Emotional Eating Cycle

After working with Ali for six months, my approach to food, which included 20 years of a vicious cycle of dieting, binging and emotional eating, has changed dramatically. She helped me work towards making positive food choices that nourish my body and gave me tools that helped to free me from the emotional eating that I had engaged in almost all of my life.

I also figured out which foods I was eating that didn’t agree with my body and left me lacking in energy and not feeling refreshed. With this knowledge, I was able to make better decisions about what I to eat.

Ali is a special soul. She radiates positivity and joy in a way that makes others inspired to do the same. I feel very lucky that I was able to work with her and cannot recommend her highly enough!
